Cardiovascular Benefit OF Statins in Patients Aged 75 Years or Older

Although the use of statins has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients 75 years of age or older, their actual effect on hard clinical outcomes in this population is unknown. One large, prospective observational study followed 4,686 patients aged 75 years or older for a mean of 3.9 years and found that statin users had a significantly lower risk of all-cause mortality, CVD mortality, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke compared with nonusers. However, the absolute risk reductions were small (between 1% and 2%), and most of the benefit was seen in patients with pre-existing CVD.
